Mounted combat is a bit complicated. Here are the relevant modifiers and whatnot:
First of all, you only need to control your combat trained steed in combat when it has received damage or been spooked. Non combat steeds must be controlled once involved in combat. If you need to control a horse then roll Animal Handling (Ride) vs the animal’s Will x4 A fumble means you are thrown from the horse 1D3 yards and take 1 damage for each yard (ignoring armour). When mounted on a war-trained steed, you may add your Animal Handling rank as bonus dice on your Fighting tests. Your opponent must beat your passive Animal Handling result with an Athletics test to pull you from your mount. When your steed is slain in combat, you test Animal Handling (Ride) (Difficulty 12) to leap clear. When you perform the Trample maneuver, you substitute your Animal Handling rank for your Fighting rank on your attack. Gain +1B on Fighting tests made to attack non-mounted opponents. When riding a steed trained for war, you gain the following benefits: If your mount doesn’t move during your turn, increase your damage on a successful Fighting test by +2.
